Good eye care has never just been about how clearly someone can see the letters on a chart. Eyes are part of the whole body, and a routine eye examination can sometimes reveal much more about a person’s general health than they may expect.
As optometrists, we are trained to look carefully at the health of the eyes as well as vision. During an eye examination, we check for signs of eye disease, but we may also pick up changes that can be linked with wider health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, inflammatory conditions and other general health concerns.
This is one of the reasons we feel so strongly that regular eye examinations are important for everyone, even if you feel that your sight has not changed. Many eye conditions develop gradually and without obvious symptoms at first, and early detection can make a real difference to how well they can be managed.
We also believe that health care works best when it is joined up. Where appropriate, and always with your consent, we can advise you to contact your GP, pharmacist, hospital eye service or another healthcare professional if we notice something that needs further investigation or support.
Our role is not only to prescribe glasses or contact lenses, but to help you understand your eyes, your vision and how they fit into your overall wellbeing. We take the time to explain what we are looking for, what we have found and what it means, so that you can feel informed and confident about your eye health.
We are passionate about preventative care, clear communication and helping our patients make choices that support their long-term health. Whether you visit us because your vision has changed, because you are due a routine check, or because something just does not feel quite right, we will always take your concerns seriously.
Looking after your eyes is part of looking after yourself — and we are very proud to play a small part in helping our patients stay well.
