If you have astigmatism, you will have blurry vision at all distances as a result of the cornea (the front surface of the eye) or the lens inside the eye being ‘irregularly’ shaped. This is nothing to worry about as it can easily be corrected with prescription glasses or special toric contact lenses.
Basically, instead of being shaped like the side of a football (the same size in all directions) the cornea is shaped like the side of a rugby ball (where the curvature varies depending on how you’re looking at it) The steepest curve will be at right angles to the shallowest.
Astigmatism is corrected using the ‘Cylinder’ or ‘Cyl’ part of your prescription. The ‘Axis’ part of your prescription denotes where the cylinder is placed in the lens.
Astigmatism is usually found in combination with either long-sightedness or short-sightedness and most people have a degree of astigmatism.
